26/07/2021 - IASO Children's Hospital: Subglottic stenosis of the trachea treated surgically for the first time in Greece

A 3 year old with subglottic stenosis of the trachea that occurred following long intubation was successfully surgically treated  at IASO Children's Hospital in Greece. The child had undergone a tracheostomy and was transferred to IASO Children's Hospital from a public hospital by decision of the Ministry of Health, so it could be treated at the IASO Children's Hospital Congenital Heart Disease and Trachea Center.

Under general anesthesia and once the child was placed on extracorporeal circulation, the stenotic part of the trachea, which was next to the vocal cords (8 mm), was resected and the tracheostomy was closed. It was an extremely challenging case that was successfully treated for the first time in Greece. Such procedures are only performed at a few dedicated centers in Europe at a very high cost.

This was the third case of tracheal stenosis to be treated by internationally acclaimed Professor Afksendiyos Kalangos and his team of specialists, consisting of Cardiac Surgeon Evangelia Ntalarizou and Cardiac Surgeon Prodromos Azariadis, and that was assisted by Marios Papadopoulos, Head of the IASO Children's Hospital Pulmonary Department, Konstantinos Patris, Anesthesiologist, and his team, Michail Choulakis, Director of the IASO Children's Hospital ENT Department, and the IASO Children's Hospital pediatric cardiologists. In addition, the IASO Children's Hospital ICU, headed by Aikaterini Bampanelou, and the nurses of the Unit and the Pediatric Cardiac Surgery Clinic provided their valuable assistance.

At IASO Children's Hospital we always make sure that the health of your children is in the best of hands. The experienced medical staff, qualified nursing staff, modern facilities, cutting-edge technology and application of innovative diagnostic and treatment methods make IASO Children's Hospital the leading pediatric hospital in Greece.

24/06/2021 - IASO Children's Hospital: Career Counseling Program

Choosing a career in this day and age is quite a difficult and demanding process. The fast-paced modern society continuously shapes new conditions and new professions. Through these changes, senior high school students are faced with deciding what job they would want to do as adults, at a tender age. This is a difficult decision that often stresses children and their parents.

Understanding the concerns of adolescents these days, IASO Children's Hospital has created a prestigious Career Counseling Program, carried out by an approved and specially trained career counselor. Using the Ariston Test taken by the student, the counselor is able to detect both their professional interests and skills. Through the counseling session that follows the test, the counselor sits with the student to jointly come up with the available choices and further discuss their academic progress. Vocational guidance is addressed to senior high school students in their last year who have to fill in their online university entry application, as well as younger students who must pick their orientation field. It is also addressed to students wishing to continue their studies at postgraduate level or employees contemplating a career change.

The Ariston Test explores the personality traits, skills and interests of examinees to identify professions that suit them.

In particular, it:

  • Is highly reliable and valid
  • Incorporates 5 tests in 1 (personality, interests, skills, abilities and psychological factors)
  • Is based on Holland’s typology theory
  • Does not just assess the interests, but also the aptitudes of students
  • Kick-starts the counseling between the approved career counselor and the interested party, providing a solution to their professional conundrum

15/06/2021 - IASO Children's Hospital: Kissing stent placement to treat severe bilateral stenosis in pulmonary arteries of 9-year-old boy, for the first time ever worldwide

Panagiotis, 9, was born with complex congenital heart disease and had already undergone three open-heart surgeries to treat it.

Two years after the last procedure, the doctors identified: 1) Severe stenosis of the main pulmonary artery before its bifurcation, 2) Very severe long stenosis of the left pulmonary artery and 3) Moderate stenosis of the right pulmonary artery. Due to the main pulmonary artery being short, it rendered the placement of a central stent within it impossible, due to the risk of destroying the pulmonary valve. At the same time, the presence of an aneurysm in the right ventricle, very close beneath the surface of the sternum, rendered extremely difficult performing a new sternotomy, for a 4th consecutive open-heart procedure.

Once the Pediatric Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery Clinic studied the imaging findings, it was decided that the young patient would undergo non-surgical opening of the pulmonary artery and the two branches, using the kissing-stenting technique. This technique is often used to open the ascending aorta bifurcation and sometimes to open the coronary artery bifurcation. This is the very time ever globally that it was successfully used on the pulmonary arteries. The diameter of the main artery increased from 8 to 18 mm (220%), of the right pulmonary artery from 4 to 10 mm (250%) and of the left pulmonary artery from 2 to 8 mm (400%). The latest technology stents used can be further dilated in the future with a simple balloon, so as to respond to the growth of the young patient, this way limiting the chance of a future open-heart procedure.

The procedure was performed by the specialized and experienced team of the IASO Children's Hospital Pediatric Cardiology Department and Cardiac Catheterization Lab, headed by Dr. Georgios Tsaousis, and under the scientific guidance of Associate Professor Vasileios Thanopoulos, as well as the support of Mr. Paris Agios, Scientific Associate and Anesthesiologist at IASO Children's Hospital. The IASO Children's Hospital Pediatric Cardiac Surgery Department, headed by world renowned Professor Afksendiyos Kalangos, took over the cardiac surgery part of the procedure.
