A few words about the Department of Neurosurgery at IASO Children’s Hospital
The Pediatric Neurosurgery Team at IASO Children’s Hospital, under the guidance of Mr. Vasileios A. Zerris, MD, MPH, MSc, FAANS, Professor of Neurosurgery at the Texas A&M University, European University Cyprus, and School of Medicine at the University of Cyprus, deals with Central Nervous System diseases troubling young patients at the beginning of their lives. Utilizing Professor V. Zerris’s specialized training and extensive experience acquired in the USA, the Department applies all modern therapeutic protocols in order to ensure the best treatment possible for the children.
The Hospital manages and treats conditions, such as hydrocephaly (dilation of the ventricular system in the brain), brain and spinal tumors, Chiari malformations (projection of brain structures into the spinal cord), syringomyelia (pathological cavity inside the spinal cord), myelomeningocele (incomplete development of the spinal cord with subsequent projection of the neural structures inside the cord), scoliosis, spasticity. With the cooperation of a craniofacial surgeon, also trained in the USA, the Department effectively treats craniosynostosis (premature fusion of skull bones in children), as well as other cranial and facial formation disorders, with excellent results.
The state-of-the-art surgical equipment of IASO Children’s Hospital, aided by cutting-edge technological means, such as surgical microscope, the ability to utilize the endoscope and neuronavigation-neuromonitoring, where needed, the support provided by our highly scientifically qualified medical staff of all pediatric, pathological, and surgical subspecialties, by our specialized Pediatric Intensive Care Units (PICUs) and Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs), as well by our specially trained nursing staff, maximize our ability to offer effective treatment to all our young patients.
When performed by highly experienced surgeons, Pediatric Neurosurgery can offer the possibility of a safe and permanent solution in patients who, if not timely and duly managed, face devastating consequences.
